Google Core Web Vitals: A Complete Guide

Did you know that, according to the Michigan Economic Development Organization, Detroit is one of the most important cities when it comes to startup development in Michigan? 23% of startups that are venture-backed are currently operating out of Detroit.

If you have a startup or business you run in Detroit or elsewhere in Michigan, you might be wondering about how to make your business stand out online. As a result, you might be wondering about the Core Web Vitals of your website.

However, if you don’t know how these work, you might feel stressed or confused.

That’s why we’ve put together this article. In it, you’ll earn everything you need to know about Google Core Web Vitals. Finally, you can have a well-functioning website and improve your business’s online presence. Read on to learn more.

Core Web Vitals

Before we go into how you can best build your website so it’s most effective in terms of Core Web Vitals, it’s important to know what these are. Basically, Core Web Vitals are specific factors that are considered by Google to be important in the overall user experience of a website.

LCP

Speed is especially important when it comes to core web vitals. One of the core web vitals, LCP (or Largest Contentful Paint) is how long it takes for a page to load when a user is attempting to access that page.

It’s the amount of time it takes for the majority of the on-screen content to appear in front of the user after they’ve clicked on a link to that website.

This is somewhat different from actual page speed, as it reflects the experience of the user being able to use the website once they’ve waited for its contents to load in such a way that they can see the page and also interact with it.

Through Google PageSpeed Insights, you can find out how fast your website’s LCP is.

Generally speaking, you want it to take 2.5 seconds or less. If it takes longer than this, you should adjust your website so it loads more quickly in regards to LCP.

FID

First Input Delay (also known as FID) is another speed-related Core Web Vital. FID measures whether it’s possible for users to interact with your page once it has loaded. If elements on your website aren’t fast enough, the user will have to wait to interact with them.

CLS

Finally, there’s the CLS Core Web Vital, also known as the Cumulative Layout Shift. This is related to how stable the elements on your page are as it loads. If they move around significantly when it does, your CLS is high, which is a bad thing.

This is because it will take your visitors longer to use your page properly and it might also confuse them.

The Problem With Page Builders

If you’re using a page builder, for example, a WordPress page builder, this can be a real problem when it comes to ensuring your Core Web Vitals are working in terms of speed. Why? Many theme builders don’t design their page builders or plugins with speed in mind.

As a result, when you use multiple plugins, you slow down your website. If you’re using a page builder for WordPress, your page builder content can look like a mess.

Additionally, if your page builder ever gets deactivated within your plugins list, you’ll end up with an error message.

In terms of speed, you’ll end up with something close to 24 out of 100 when it comes to mobile speed. As for desktop, it’ll be close to 61 out of 100, which isn’t that fast either.

This is in large part because of all the different files that have to load when only one webpage is loading. These could be as many as 10 files at a time.

Page builders simply aren’t optimized, in terms of code, for speed.

This is also why “Defer unused css” will show up when you’re analyzing what has to load for the page to be fully ready for website visitors. It shows up when the amounts of code are endless.

The Solution: Gutenberg for Building Pages

The solution to this issue is to eliminate page builders and to use the Gutenberg block editor as a replacement when using WordPress. Many benefits come from using this solution. First of all, block-based editing is the way of the future for WordPress.

Additionally, if you use any plugins that are for block editing, they won’t interrupt your flow while you’re using the Gutenberg theme.

It’s also incredibly easy to use. If you aren’t a coder, you won’t have to worry about using this editor being a challenge. You can still have complex layouts without having to code.

Visual editing is also quite easy when you’re using the Gutenberg theme. You have many typography options, layout choices, and much more than you would with other themes.

If you want a editor that is fast and easy to use and that won’t negatively affect the speed-related Core Web Vitals of your website, Gutenberg is the way to go.
